Doda, September 13

Even as the government is focusing on directly buying apples from growers in Kashmir since the communication clampdown has increased growers’ problems, no one is focusing on apple growers of Chenab region.

The fruit growers in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts are facing huge losses as no buyer is coming to these areas despite having huge production this year.

The apple production in these three districts has remained quite high and the growers were expecting a bonanza this time as the demand for apple outside always remains high. But after August 5, when the government imposed restrictions in the entire state with no mobile Internet facility yet, no buyer is coming to the area to take the production in bulk. “This year even small apple trees have huge production and our expectations are high. Alongside Kashmiri apples, the demand of apples from Doda and Kishtwar districts is increasing every year. Earlier, we used to sell apples on trees and the buyers from Kashmir and other areas were coming to take them to the markets outside the state,” said Waseem Ahmed, an apple grower of Dali area of Doda district.

“But since we don’t have any communication with any of the buyers, we are forced to sell our production in the local market where we don’t get good amount,” he said.

The situation is similar in Bhaderwah where the apple production this time is also high but there are no buyers. Kishtwar is no different, but the money is coming from anywhere.

Horticulture Department officials are feeling handicapped in the absence of mobile Internet facility. “We are well aware of the huge production, but the department can’t buy it and sell it outside.”
