Doda, October 13
Even as the top leadership of National Conference (NC) is still behind bars, a few party leaders at the grass-roots level here in Doda district are contesting the Block Development Council (BDC) elections, scheduled for October 24.
These leaders are not contesting on party mandate, as NC has announced the boycott of these elections and have jumped into the election as independents.
One such candidate is Choudhary Muhammad Hanief of Dhadkai panchayat of the Bhalessa block, who is a third-time sarpanch and holds the post of NC block president of Gandoh. He is contesting as an Independent, but continues to hold the post of NC block president.“I am contesting the election as an Independent and not on party ticket,” Hanief told The Tribune, adding: “I continue to hold the post of block president of Gandoh and haven’t resigned from the post yet.”
Same is case with the Congress, whose leaders are contesting the BDC elections as Independent candidates. After the government announced to hold BDC polls on party basis, only the ruling BJP candidates are contesting on party tickets and facing competition from Independent candidates being backed by the Congress and NC.
The only problem these Independent candidates is facing is that they will not be having any support from the party leadership in getting the votes of sarpanches and panches, whereas BJP nominees have full support from their party and former MLAs, who still enjoy their say in the state government. — TNS
