Srinagar, November 27
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has strengthened the security cover around the locations in Kashmir where functions of the much-hyped developmental programme ‘Back to Village’ are being conducted.
The decision has been taken a day after militants struck at one such government function in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district and killed an officer and a sarpanch of the Congress.“In view of Tuesday’s militant attack, we have deployed security forces around all locations where the programme is being held in Kashmir,” a senior police official told The Tribune.
The six-day programme started on Monday and has witnessed low public participation as people are angry over the abrogation of Article 370 and non-execution of development works promised by officials during the same programme held in June. For foolproof security arrangements, the government has also clubbed various locations where the programme is being held in south Kashmir.
In Pulwama, the government has clubbed 32 locations into 11. Shopian DC Yasin Choudhary said the security grid around panchayats had been strengthened to keep the spirit of the programme intact in the district, where 36 militants were presently active. Shopian has 98 panchayats and will be covered in three phases of the six-day programme.
