Jammu, October 23

The Excise Department has initiated a campaign to create awareness against drug addiction and illicit liquor among the youth of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), especially Poonch and Rajouri districts.

Both the districts have not just become a route to smuggling drugs, but the peddlers have been able to recruit the local youth in the supply chain and turn them into addicts.

“Our awareness campaign against drug menace and illicit liquor is aimed at diverting attention of the youth from irrelevant issues and guide them to play a constructive role in nation building. Recently, we established a full-fledged library in Muradpur , Rajouri. Besides, we conducted a mega sports festival in Poonch to shift youth towards games,” said Amarjeet Singh, Deputy Excise Commissioner Executive, Jammu.

Singh said they have so far conducted 40 awareness camps, 22 nukkad nataks (street plays), interactive sessions, painting contests, apart from counselling 20 families in Chak Randwa village of Samba district.

“After the department’s initiative, these families came out of illicit liquor trade. They are now earning their livelihood by making candles and running small shops,” he said. Singh said the department recently conducted a socio-economic survey of families involved in illicit liquor trade in Kathua district to find out the reasons which push them into this activity.

The Excise Department seized 3,614-kg poppy straw in eight different cases from Lakhanpur in 2018, besides confiscating 21,060 bottles.
