Police Monday foiled a possible attempt to target the recruitment process of Special Police Officers (SPOs) in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday.
A senior police officer told Rising Kashmir that initially a person was caught along with a grenade and threatening candidates who were filing applications for the recruitment of SPOs in the district.
“On his disclosure, his other three associates were also taken into custody,” he said adding their questioning was underway.
However, identity of the detained persons could not be known immediately.
Another police officer said investigation was underway to ascertain the intention behind it.
“Initial investigations reveal that the plan was to kill the candidates, who were filing application forms,” he said.
This is second attempt of its kind to target recruitment of any security agencies this year.
Earlier, On March 11, a man was held with grenades at an army recruitment rally in Surankote in Poonch district.
The Police department is currently recruiting around 5000 SPOs for various districts including the hotbed of militancy in south Kashmir.
The applications for recruitment of SPOs were called on separate dates after August 5 when Government of India abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir State into two Union Territories.
According to an official, the candidates have to qualify physical endurance test as per the laid down rules and regulations before they are recruited in the force.
In some districts, the recruitment drive has concluded while it was still underway in some districts of the Valley including Baramulla, he said.
There are over 24000 SPOs working with police department and they have been working under different capacities—maintaining law and order, security, and intelligence.
