Among stations recording the rainfall (in cm) are Kothagiri-12; Machilipatnam-11; Thiruchuli, Wynad, Dharamasthala and Bandipura-7 each; Suralacode, Rasipuram, Paramakudi, Rayagada, Coonoor and Tuticorin-6 each; Madurai-4; Kozhikode-3; Tondi, Atiramapattinam and Bengaluru-2 each.

Active phase to persist

The Regional Meteorological Office, Chennai, in its outlook on Friday predicted more heavy rain along the hill ranges of Theni and Nilgiris districts in Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain is also forecast over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tiruppur and Dindigul districts as well as over neighbouring Kerala.

Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, the North-East monsoon is predicted to maintain its current active phase with a disproportionate bias to the southern two-thirds of the region with heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast to occur to the South-West and Mid-West as well as South-East.

Circulation-trough combine

As of Friday afternoon, the main rain-producing system continued to be a persisting cyclonic circulation located over the Comorin, having shifted overnight from the Gulf of Mannar to the East. Also persisting is the trough (narrow corridor of lower pressure) connecting the Comorin-Maldives with the Karnataka coast.

The trough allows for the convergence of winds and a conducive environment for thunderstorms, lightning and volatile weather. And therefore, the predicted scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala for three more days. It would be isolated to scattered over Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and Andhra Pradesh.
